Environmental Interperative Center | Dearborn, MI
Research
This sponsored project for the University of Michigan Dearborn was a collaborative effort between Interior Design and Communication Design, centered on redesigning the Environmental Interperative Center to better engage the community with their local environment. Research into natural movement patterns and visitor behavior revealed how people intuitively navigate outdoor landscapes and how that flow can inform interior circulation. The work also highlighted the importance of accessibility, multilingual communication, and interactive learning tools that support engagement across age groups.
Concept
Natural Movement is a design approach that reimagines the EIC as an immersive educational environment shaped by the rhythm and flow found in nature. The space uses form, color, and interactive elements to guide visitors organically through the center. Features such as dynamic floor wayfinding, digital trail boards, sensory bird calls, and flexible exhibit components reinforce the idea that learning occurs through exploration and movement.
